KTM 950 Adventure

Prior to the ST1300, for a considerable few years, my only bike was the KTM 950 Adventure. The KTM replaced a previous pair of bikes, a Yamaha XJR 1300 and BMW R1150GS. The KTM was a more capable off-road bike than my old GS (at least for my level of riding skill), had similar power to the XJR, and would basically take me anywhere I wanted to go. It was particularly well suited to longer distance road/trail rides, which was probably my main reason for buying the bike.

I kept up for some time a K T M 950Info page to keep track of tyre choices, suppliers etc.

A week later, the KTM gets baptised - now fitted with crash bars, just in case.

So I thought to myself, the KTM is a big heavy bike, maybe it's time for something a bit nimbler. After a test ride or two on various machines, this is what I came up with:

OK, so I may have gone a bit astray. I ended up with a 286kg behemoth of an old fart's touring machine. But after a short test ride she who must sometimes be obeyed gave it the pillion seal of approval and I was actually quite taken with the beaST myself. Sunstate were reasonably negotiable on the price and the bike seemed to be in great condition for a 2002, 88,000km bike, so the deal was done.

Picked the bike up Tuesday, had the KTM sold and delivered Wednesday. No point in hanging around...

The Great Annual Haigslea Swap Meet

Australian Motorcycle Museum, Butlers Road, Haigslea,

Located 17km west of Ipswich on the Warrego Highway. This is always a popular ride. (Possibly down through Mt. Mee/Mt. Glorious roads and return through Somerset Dam.) Food is available in the kiosk and the museum is open as well.

Any Week Day

Any Week Day rides are up & running on Thursdays with many done & dusted. We usually meet at the Cafe near Joes Water Hole in Eumundi main street but keep an eye out for an SMS or Email the day before in case of any changes. It's all at a moment's notice but then that is often the way of things. If anyone wants company on a ride at any time, just put out a note or word the day before & see what happens. We can meet anywhere really. Stay Tooned.

Any Sunday

On any Sunday the Wild Geese have been meeting at Benchmark, 2 Balgownie Drive, Peregian Springs. After several years at this venue change is afoot, so check the Rides Planned page for the latest on where to meet.

NOTE: So that you may advise friends & those that you meet, why not grab some WGMCC Cards from Rob so you can pass on the web site address so they can share their ride reports, tales & adventures on this forum.

Last Sunday In Month Easy Ride For 25th November 2007

Hi Guys. If a ride hasn't already been suggested for the 25th November 'Last Sunday in the Month Easy Ride' (that even though is open to all, is particularly sensitive to the needs of pillion riders, and new and intermediate riders), could I suggest the ride from Coolum to Kenilworth via Dulong, Palmwoods, Eudlo, Mooloolah, Landsborough, Peachester, Booroobin, Conondale via Postman Track and Policeman Spur Road, and Cambroon via Eastern Mary River Road.

My guess is that in adhering to posted speed limits it will take about 1.5 hours from Coolum to Peachester, and about 1 hour from Peachester to Kenilworth. If we leave the Coolum Coffee Club as near as possible to 9:00 AM, we have time to stop for coffee at the Peachester Fruit & Veg and Landscape business at around 10:30, leave there at 11:00 and arrive Kenilworth around noon for lunch.

From Kenilworth people can decide if they want to go further on up to Imbil etc, or cut down to Eumundi, or up to Mapleton via Obi Obi. I'm happy to be tail-end-charlie or near. I'm open to criticism of my proposal, and am happy to go with alternative suggestions.

I realise there is a general rule that for the 'On Any Sunday' rides, "Those that show will choose where to go". However, given the 'Last Sunday in the Month Easy Ride' focus, it may be useful for interested parties to have a rough idea of the route, and the ride times beforehand. I understand the 'On Any Sunday' rides and the 'Last Sunday in the Month Easy' rides are not mutually exclusive, both can run on the same day, simultaneously. Cheers to all. Tony. On Any Sunday Ride For 18th Nov

Hi Guys,

Can I suggest the following ride for 18th November please?

On any Sunday ride: Coolum Beach to Boreen Point via Valdora, North Arm, Kenilworth, Brooloo, Imbil (stop at Imbil for morning tea), Kybong, Traveston, Cooran, Boreen Point (Apollonian Pub at Boreen Pt for lunch). If we travel pretty close to the speed limit the following time-lines will prevail (more or less): Leave Coffee Club @ 9:30, arrive Imbil around 10:45; Leave Imbil 11:30, arrive Boreen Pt around 12:30; Leave Boreen Pt @ 14:30/15:00 for Coolum Beach via Cooroibah, Teewantin, Noosaville, Weyba Downs etc. Arrive Coffee Club circa 15:30/16:00. This return leg of course is optional, people may (and probably will) wish to go directly home from Boreen Pt.

Long Ride

Jag Goose

Well it's done and booked! JAG and "precious" are heading to Tassie. For those that wish to share in some of the adventure here are the dates of travel. Leaving 6 am sunny coast on the 06/01 arriving in Melbourne 09/01 to catch the 8pm ferry. Arriving in Tassie on 10/01 and heading to Hobart for rendezvous with family. The next ten days are campervan and family time around the "Apple Isle". Then on 21st i resume my motorbike journeys around Tassie to end up in Devenport to catch the 8pm ferry on the 23/01 arrive Melb following day to complete the return journey to the Sunny coast(this could be approx 4-5 days???). Apart from the pre booked family campervan holiday in Tass the rest of the journey, down, there , and return is completely open. Advise me if you wish to join me for any part of it . Gheerulla State Forest

Gheerulla Camping and Trail Bike Area

Located 2km from the main road on the bank of Gheerulla Creek amidst rugged landscape with sheer cliffs and intriguing rock formations. Activities include swimming, bushwalking, hiking and trail bike riding. Riders must obtain a permit and must be licensed with registered motorcycles. Facilities are barbecues, drinking water, picnic tables and toilets. Firewood is supplied. Dogs are allowed overnight, however they must remain under control and on a leash at all times. A self-serve camping system operates. Obtain your camping permit at the camping area, complete the form and deposit your camping fees (as cash, cheque or credit card number) in the box at the camping registration sign or hut. Facilities are provided for rubbish disposal. Access by conventional vehicle via the Eumundi-Kenilworth Road, 6 km east of Kenilworth.

Agnes Waters

Seems that the consensus us of opinion tends to suggest that a trip to Carnarvon Gorge would be far better recieved. Agnes Waters is still on the agenda and maybe later in July. Stay Tuned. RR

Lions Road

Had a chance last week to ride the Lion's Road on my way back from delivering a vehicle to Coffs, I had the bike on the back of the delivery ute. The road is north of Kyogle and comes out at the Mt Lindsay Highway.

I think to ride this road southwards, then over to Uki - Murwillumbah - Natural Arch and north again would be a good one day ride for reasonably quick riders. But there are camping areas on the Lion's Road , which incidentally has a lookout over the 'Border Loop', a spiral system to get trains over the range, and could be a good camp over trip. I know it well Pat, I have ridden this one in the past to get to Coffs via the scenic route (starting with a loop around Somerset Dam to make it interesting), and rode it again recently, there and back, on my eventful trip to Byron Bay - the bike bending one. It is an excellent road, though a little bumpy. If anyone wants to arrange a Lions Road Campover I will very likely be up for it. -- Steve/Gizmo

Doing Our Best To Keep You Informed

There has been some comment that varying the start point for the Sunday rides will lead to confusion. Time will tell on that one, but Rob makes every effort to keep everyone informed via email and through posts on this news page. To make it easier to find the location of the next Any Sunday I have posted the latest information at the top of the Rides Planned page, and made that page easier to get to by including it in the site's menu system. If you hover your mouse over 'Rides' in the menu at the top of the page you should see a drop-down menu which includes Rides Planned.

You might also like to subscribe to this site using your favourite RSS news reader (e.g. your mail program), so that you can automatically be informed of any site updates. Just click on the XML link at the bottom of the page and your browser should offer an option to subscribe to changes - in Firefox you will see a 'Subscribe Now' button.

WILD GEESE ANYSUNDAY RIDE / RIDE CALENDAR

As most will know, the Wild Geese is a MOTORCYCLE CLUB with loose rules, (Well none actually).

Our local rides have usually set off from a local cafe at 0900 ("here to ride not to socialise") and over the past 9 YEARS the Geese have had at least 6 different venues to meet and even more where the Annual Geese Gig has been held.

Over time there has been a creeping shift to socialise more than ride and although this is also good, it has begun to detract from what we are really all about.

That is, to Gather, Chatter & more importantly, Flock Off.

There will be some who like to meet, eat, drink & talk for a while, sometimes longer, and perhaps ride off for a bit then go home. Knock yourselves out. Remember, nothing is set in concrete.

Then there are others who, only being able to ride once or twice in a week, really want to get out on the roads to somewhere & feel the wind in their hair (for those that have it).

To that end, The Riding Geese, for the short term, intend to meet Opposite the Eumundi Post Office 0830 - 0900 under The Flocking Fig Tree, to ride for coffee somewhere else, and a further destination for the day.

This "LOOSE" plan is subject to change as the members see fit. So, fuel your bike before you get there (that means you two, Ozzie & Rob) & be ready to ride.
